FAQ’S
The amount of roughage your horse needs depends on the dry matter content of the roughage. This is the weight of the product without water. A horse needs at least 1.5 kg dry matter from roughage per 100 kg body weight daily for a properly functioning digestive system. Because roughage is a natural product, the dry matter percentage may vary from the average. Example of roughage requirement for horse 600 kg: 9 kg dry matter equals Grass 60 kg Dried silage 15 kg Hay 10,5 kg

If your horse does a lot of work, it may be necessary to supplement the energy requirements. At Hartog you will find various types of concentrated feeds which are ideal as a supplement to roughage. Take a look at our Balance, Condition or Strength for example.
It is important that a horse's ration has a consistent quality. We therefore recommend that sudden changes in the feed should be kept to a minimum. Do you buy roughage in small batches? Then make sure that the roughage comes from the same farmer or the same piece of land to keep the changes as minimal as possible. When you change your horse's feed, we advise you to do it gradually. Set aside a few days to weeks to slowly change the ration. This way the horse and the digestive system can get used to the changed feed.
Proteins consist of amino acids. Amino acids are the basis of all life on earth. Therefore, protein is indispensable for horses and it is important that your horse gets the right amount. Especially growing horses, horses in top sport and pregnant/lactating mares have an increased protein requirement. Does your horse need extra protein in its ration? Then choose feed with a high protein content, like the Lucerne mix.
Colic is a collective term for abdominal pain in horses. This pain can be caused by the wrong food, eating sand, worm infestation or incorrect feed management, among other things. After colic, it is important that the horse is fed rations in which the basis is plenty of good roughage. This will allow the intestinal peristalsis to get back to normal. In addition, Hartog Digest provides additional support for the digestive system.
